Garfield Culinary Arts Program Cooks Up
Success
Students learn how to create edible
masterpieces right in school, with our celebrated culinary arts program. It
combines career training with practical living skills, all done in a gleaming
new kitchen.
The culinary arts
students' education is intense and crosses the academic disciplines. Our
students learn the math of menus and portions, the geography of cuisine, the
science of food preparation, the history of food, and the business of
restaurants and catering. They even learn how to prepare and serve food in real
life -- for our students also cater events for the school district and other
organizations.
Garfield's program
has become so successful it has expanded to a state-of-the-art kitchen with
cutting edge equipment. Students will be able to serve special events in the
courtyard by the kitchen and seat up to 55 diners.
"This takes our
students to another level of education," says their teacher, Arlyn
Hackett, a professional chef. "They can walk out of here and start a
career if they choose. It's up to them."
